Life of a Teenage Bird Kid -3-

Chapter 3-
              
               After my new found ability to breathe underwater, the white coats ran more tests. Some successful others…very, very, painful. I now knew several things about me!
• I'm not fireproof. The burns all over my body are proof of that.
• I can't read minds.
• I can't manipulate people and or animals.
• I can turn invisible if I'm still. But I found that out later in my crate when the white coats walked by looking for me.
• I can read auras and emotional thoughts. The white coats don't know that either.
• I can breathe underwater. I'm very thankful for that too.
• I can run at fast speeds constantly.

                Finally, the white coats ran out of tests to try on me, and I was back into my crate. Surprisingly, I was happy to be going back to the crate. Anything is better than being with the white coats.
               I can finally get some sleep now. I curled up in a ball in the far corner of my crate and dozed off.

              The sounds of voices woke me from my nap. Were the white coats coming back for me? I prayed otherwise.
"What the…? What is this…?" a girl's voice said. It wasn't a white coat. That much was obvious. Who was it? How did they get here?
              The sounds of footsteps filled the room as they entered where mycrate was held.
"I'm supposed to save the world, Remember?"
"Yeah."
"So, I'm going to start with these guys. Start poppin' latches!"
            They were setting us free! It's a miracle! Freedom! The one thing I always thought would be unobtainable. A boy bent down, and looked into my crate. His hair was black and hung over one of his eyes. He looked…familiar.
"Hey there." He said.
I didn't say anything.
"Well, we're getting you out of here."
              With that said, he popped the latch on my crate and reached in a hand. I was hesitant to take his hand. I didn't know if he was trustworthy. He seemed to detect my hesitation.
"Come on. I'm here to help."
               I looked him in the eyes. I couldn't detect any sense of dishonesty, so I placed my hand in his. He helped me out of the crate and I looked up at him, since he was taller than me.
"Thank you." I managed to say.
He smiled a little half smile, "You're welcome."
"This way!!" the girl's voice called out.
                The boy turned and began to run in the direction of her voice. I followed. Suddenly, we all stopped. An Eraser stood in our way.
"We need to chat, Maximum. You and I." he said.
It seemed she knew him. "Lead them out, Fang. I'll buy you some time."
"'Kay." The boy who had let me free said.
               So his name was Fang. I stored both of their names away for later. He lead us down the sewer system. The sounds of fighting reached my ears. Fang heard it too and turned around.
"Max." He murmured. He turned to the group of us. "Okay, you're all free now."
              Everyone ran forward, into the darkness of the sewers. Everyone but me. Fang noticed and looked at me.
"You going?"
I nodded. "Thank you again, Fang."
             He looked a little surprised to hear his name.
"So you know my name." he said.
I nodded.
"Can I know yours?" he asked.
"Aura." I replied. "My name is Aura."
            With that said, I took off running through the sewer system. I ran for the longest time in total darkness. But my sense of direction was keen, so I could get myself out.
            Ahead of me, I saw a light. I picked up my speed, unfurled my wings, and launched myself off the edge and into the sky.
            I smiled and soared into the air. How good it felt to be free.
